  • The Importance of Wellness Exams

At Westlands Veterinary Clinic, we take the responsibility of being your pet's veterinarian very seriously. Your pet needs more than just medical care when they're sick. When they are healthy, they should receive routine checkups to ensure they stay that way. We recommend that your pet come in for a physical examination once every 12 months. Puppies, kittens, seniors, or pets with a health condition should visit the veterinarian at least twice a year for preventive care to better ensure their good health.

Our wellness exams allow us to check on your pet's health while they're here, so we can monitor any issues they may be having.

Furthermore, we can take steps to prevent severe health conditions from developing, so you can worry less about their health and more about creating special memories with your beloved pets.

  • Our Pet Wellness Exam

During one of our routine wellness checkups, our team will go over the following with you:

    • Comprehensive Physical Exam: A complete physical examination includes assessing the following areas - eyes, ears, nose, abdominal region, weight, body composition, skin and coat, joints and muscles, heartbeat and respiratory rate, temperature, and observing any potential tumors or pain.
    • Internal Parasite Testing: We can send your pet's stool to our lab to check for parasites such as hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and others.
    • Dental Exam: We will thoroughly check your dog's teeth and gums to check for infections, abscesses, tooth decay, and other dental issues.
    • Vaccinations: If your pet needs them, we will administer the proper vaccinations per your pet's needs and schedule.
    • Preventative Prescriptions: Depending on your pet's specific needs, we can administer preventive prescriptions for heartworm, flea, and tick prevention.
    • Specialized blood tests: If needed, we can administer blood tests specifically designed for their stage of life and monitor their levels.
    • Nutritional Counseling: You will receive advice on meeting your pet's dietary needs.
    • General Feedback: Our dedicated team will discuss your pet's daily behavior, eating and drinking habits, exercise routine, and also any other concerns you may have about your pet's wellbeing.

Here are some general behavioral considerations you may also wish to address with us:

Does your pet like other animals and people?

How many hours of the day does your pet spend home by themselves?

Do you make sure your pet has a comfortable place to sleep?

Is your pet anxious sometimes, or does it have other phobias?
